The mystery of 2 URLS and 1 Google Keyword Search
I just had a look at the user traffic stats for a site I’m working on and I noticed the keyword BOSE PORTABLE SOUNDDOCK bought us 127 visitors for the BOSE PORTABLE SOUNDDOCK page which we are not promoting at the minute.
I’ve seen the keyword up in the traffic stats every now and then and today it reminded of something that the owner of Syndicate Kahuna said
When Google start giving you traffic for a keyword that your not actively targeting
- Pay attention
- Do the research on the search volume possible on that keyword
- If its viable start building keyword anchored backlinks to that page
So I starting doing some investigating…
I typed BOSE PORTABLE SOUNDDOCK into a google search
and couldn’t see the site anywhere in the top 100 results
I ended up finding it at result 166
But it made me think why did these visitors go through that many search results and then click on the site in questions meta title in the SERP
This prompted me to go back to my traffic stats program which allows me to track the exact url google sent the visitors via and this is where it got interesting.
I copied and pasted the URL I got from my traffic stats into my browser and found the site at the search result position of 54
Now I know I can impove the SERP position with my link building tactics but what I want to know is
Why are 2 different URLs been used by google for the same keyword search with 2 different search results?
Google link for result 166 ( This the the result as this is being written so it subject to change )
Google link for result 54 ( This the the result as this is being written so it subject to change )
Do a Ctrl F and type in bid-u-like.co.uk you might also need to have your search setting set to 100 results per page.

Interesting article, had me glued until i clicked on the two links.
I think the difference is due to one search being “web” and one being “uk only”. Looking at the results in the first 5 positions on the two options you can see it is much heavier in .co.uk for the uk only search.
At least you have highlighted a very important issue in the difference between the two options. I have a .com and will often get penalised in the uk only search for this reason. Time for a 301 redirect!
Nice Blog BTW!
Well done very good observation. Thank for your insightful feedback, can’t believe I missed that. What is Man, I better get to my link building to improve the position for BOSE PORTABLE SOUNDDOCK
